What a Recliner Actually Needs From a Room

The number on the box is folded depth, and it is the wrong one. A recliner reclines - the figure that decides whether it fits a room is folded depth plus the gap the mechanism needs to open, measured from the wall behind it, not the footprint it stands on folded up.

The mistake this page exists to stop

A recliner gets measured folded, against a wall, and it fits. The chair goes home, gets pushed back to the wall, and the footrest comes up - and the backrest has nowhere to go. The piece either sits pulled forward into the room permanently, or the mechanism cannot open at all. Neither is a defect in the chair; it is a measurement that stopped one step too early.

The fix is one extra number: clearance from the wall, which is reclined depth plus the gap the mechanism itself needs to swing open. That is the only figure below worth writing down before ordering.

0 of 10 pieces have complete published dimensions right now. The rest will be filled in as each listing’s Product Details is checked, or the piece is measured by hand.

Width, height, folded depth and reclined depth are as published on each listing’s own Product Details - they are not independently measured, and a dash means the figure has not been transcribed yet rather than that it is zero. Height is folded backrest height, shown for reference only - it plays no part in whether a piece fits a doorway, a wall or a room. Clearance from the wall is reclined depth plus the gap the mechanism needs open. Ground conditions, doorway trim and the room itself are not in the arithmetic: measure before ordering.

Three checks, not one

A footprint number answers one question. Buying a recliner actually raises three, and they are different measurements:

Will it come through the door

Compare the published width against the doorway it has to pass through, not the room it ends up in. Most interior doors clear about 32 inches - see measuring a doorway for delivery.

Will it sit against the wall

The width is the wall run it needs, corner to corner, with nothing else planned for that stretch.

Will it recline in the room

Reclined depth plus the wall gap is the clear floor needed in front of the piece, not just behind it. This is the number a wall-hugger mechanism is built to shrink - see how a wall-hugger mechanism works.

Sizing questions

What is the difference between folded depth and reclined depth?

Folded depth is the chair closed, footrest down - the number on most listings. Reclined depth is measured with the footrest up and the back tilted, which is the shape the chair actually takes in use, and is always the larger figure.

How much space does a recliner need from the wall?

Reclined depth plus the gap its mechanism needs to open - shown as “clearance from wall” in the table above. Push the chair flush to the wall using only the folded number and the footrest may not have room to rise.

Does a wall-hugger recliner solve this?

It reduces the gap needed, not the reclined depth itself. See how a wall-hugger mechanism works.

Why does this page show dashes instead of numbers?

Those figures have not yet been transcribed from the listing’s own Product Details page. They are not zero - check the current listing before ordering.
